About Us
The Centre for Trade Policy and Development(CTPD) is a non-profit, membership based trade policy think tank established in 2004.
Formerly known as the ‘Civil Society Trade Network of Zambia’ (CSTNZ), the organisation has progressed from being a network to being a think tank. The organisation is affiliated to Africa Trade Networks (ATN), Our World Is Not For Sale Network (OWINFS), Southern African People Solidarity Network (SAPSN) and has a membership of 16 local Non-governmental Organisations and individual members.
CTPD aims to promote equitable pro-poor trade policies and practices in Zambia through trade reform at national, regional and international levels. In addition the organisation Facilitates the participation of member organizations and stakeholders to ensure that trade and investment serves as a tool for poverty eradication.

UNDERSTANDING ZAMBIA'S CHINESE DEBT: PROPOSALS FOR PRODUCTIVE ENGAGEMENT
The rising debt in Zambia has become a source of concern and one that must be addressed with the urgency it deserves. The country has borrowed from different sources of which Chinese lending arguably constitutes a significant proportion. Chinese debt is about 30% of the total external debt portfolio but others have raised serious doubts on the validity of the figure with some contending that the debt could be much higher than the official figures.
Zambia is among the countries with a high risk of debt distress and is currently grappling with a rapid growth in public debt. In 2018 alone, Zambia’s external debt increased by US$1.3 billion: this included 16.5% increase in loans from the Export Import Bank of China and 27% increases in loans from China Development Bank (Ministry of Finance, 2019).
